NZSBA pleased with reformatted HRNZ Awards
September 8, 2015
NZSBA welcomes the decision by the HRNZ Executive to re-instate the Four-Year-Old Annual Awards. NZSBA was disappointed several years ago when the four-year-old awards were combined with older horses as part of a decision to consolidate four and five-year-old racing.
John Mooney NZSBA Chairman said:
“At the time I thought the awards could have been retained. In the last couple of years we have seen some excellent four-year-old performances not recognised because of outstanding older horses such as Terror to Love two years ago.
At the Awards ceremony Terrry McDonald commented that he felt uneasy accepting the award given the efforts of Christen Me as a four-year-old.”
“I have heard people say that there are too many awards and the numbers should be cut further. This is rubbish. Our industry needs to recognise and reward excellence. The Annual Awards ceremony this year was well-run, finished early and allowed winners time for rightful recognition.”
John Mooney also congratulated HRNZ on accepting the recommendation of the Awards Committee and the HRNZ/Breeders Liaison Committee to establish new awards for the Trotting Stallion of the Year and the Trotting Mare of the Year.
“In recent years it has become increasingly obvious that we need to give more recognition to trotting horses, owners and breeders. Trotting is now over a third of our industry in terms of breeding, ownership and racing. Average trotting stakes are the same as average pacing stakes. Our trotters are now world class and have developed into a fabulous breed." Mooney added.
